CommONEnergy - CommONEnergy - re-conceptualize shopping malls from consumerism to energy conservation
Category: |
Construction
|
Client: |
EC (European Commission) |
Duration: |
2013 - 2017 (still active) |
Objective: |
CommONEnergy focuses on existing shopping malls to be refurbished and buildings with a different original function, redesigned to become shopping malls. Whole sales & Retail buildings represent 28% of the total non-residential ones, accounting for approximately 157 Mtoe in 2005. Considering typical shopping malls high impact on modern society, the project addresses their transformation as lighthouses of energy efficient architectures and systems as well as assessment transparency. CommONEnergy has the objective to re-conceptualize shopping malls through deep retrofitting, developing a systemic approach made of technologies and solution sets as well as methods and tools to support their implementation and to assess their impact in a life cycle approach. The main concept to advance the state-of-the-art is the shifting from single-action refurbishment to deepretrofitting, with a systemic performance-driven approach including: integrated design process guidelines, integrative modelling environment, energy-economic evaluation tools, lean construction and management procedures, continuous commissioning approach, environmental and sociocultural impact assessment. The Systemic Retrofitting Approach allows to achieve the foreseen targets: up to factor 4 reduction of energy demand, power peaks shaving and 50% increasing share of renewable energy source favoured by the intelligent energy management and effective storage. 10 to 20 systemic solution-sets will be developed, demonstrating the widest replication of the cases investigated during the project. These outstanding energy performances will be achieved with short pay-back times (below 7 years) and high indoor environmental quality, thanks to industrial conceptualization of the solutions and implementation tools. Organisation of technical workshops for relevant stakeholders contribute to create a generation of skilled practitioners and promote a domino effect to exploit the benefits. |

In EVREST Life Cycle Assessment models of small and compact EREVs (Extended range electric vehicles) and equivalent reference vehicles are developed, considering the production and the use phase. The assessments of small vehicles focus on an environmental comparison of the developed small EREV with an equivalent BEV (battery electric vehicle) while the compact EREVs are compared with equivalent conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles. The LCA results of the use phase of the assessed EREVs are also analysed with regard to their spatial distribution based on WP4 results. The mobiTopp traffic simulation results define all vehicle trips during one week in the model region, the results of the energy supply model allow determining the time dependent and local electricity grid mix during charging operation. Different scenarios with increasing EREV shares and various charging options are assessed and compared with a reference scenario without electric vehicles. The results are graphically presented in maps showing the relative savings compared to the reference scenario. |

2010 - 2011 (completed) |
Objective: |
The overall goal of the project "SP1-JTI-FCH.2009.5.5 LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA)" was to develop a specific guidance document for application to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies and related training material with courses for practitioners in industry and research. It is foreseen that this guidance document will be applied to all projects funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) involving LCA in the field of hydrogen production systems and fuel cell technologies. The guidance document is based on and in line with the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) Handbook on LCA, coordinated by the European Commission's JRC-IES, through the European Platform on LCA. The ILCD Handbook is applicable to a wide range of different decision-contexts and sectors, and therefore needs to be translated to product-specific criteria, guidelines and simplified tools to foster LCA applications in the specific industry sectors. The FC-HyGuide project responds to this need by providing a guidance document on how to perform every step of a LCA for hydrogen (H2) production systems and fuel cell technologies.Including hydrogen production and fuel cell technology specific examples the "manual" offers a step-by-step guidance for LCA practitioners in industry and research. |

Objective: |
The HyTEC project will expand the existing European network of hydrogen demonstration sites into two of the most promising early markets for hydrogen and fuel cells, Denmark and the UK. The capital cities of Copenhagen and London will deploy a fleet of 30 next generation hydrogen fuel cell passenger vehicles in three different vehicle classes taxis, passenger cars and scooters. These state-of-the-art vehicles will be used in day to day urban fleet operations, thus taking a step forward from technology demonstration projects, towards fuel cell vehicles in the hands of real users. New publicly accessible fuelling stations will lead to genuine refuelling networks covering each capital city. These will be appropriate for expanding the pre-commercial rollout of hydrogen vehicles. An extensive research program will assess the technical performance of the vehicles over a two year demonstration period, a life cycle impact assessment of the vehicles will demonstrate the overall well to wheels impacts and social studies will investigate the non-technical barriers. The results of the project will inform future commercialisation and infrastructure rollout planning by policy makers and industry players. A widespread dissemination campaign will be aimed at improving public awareness of the potential for hydrogen vehicles as a future low carbon transport solution. This will be backed up by a more targeted campaign aiming at industry players, opinion formers and key policy makers across Europe. For the first time, the project will create genuine links between the new and existing European hydrogen demonstration projects, with a view to informing ongoing strategic planning for hydrogen rollout and also ensuring a common voice towards the expansion of the hydrogen vehicle fleet in Europe towards commercialisation. |

SENSE - Sustainability Evaluation of Solar Energy Systems
Category: |
Energy
|
Client: |
EC (European Commission) |
Duration: |
2003 - 2005 (completed) |
Objective: |
The today's main challenges for the solar industry are the need to reduce prices for solar systems, the foreseeable scarceness of raw materials and the necessary improvement of the energy pay back time. The unsolved recycling issues will become a problem in the near future. The project SENSE will face these challenges by developing recycling strategies for a-Si, CIS and CdTe solar cells and by scientifically based analysis of the efficiency of the solar systems, based on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). This has to consider production, use and End of Life (EoL) aspects of the complete systems to be holistic. As recycling is a possibility to save energy for the primary production of new materials, it also will affect the energy payback time positively, beneath the reduction of the material scarceness and the reduction of material costs. |

Waste2Go - Development and verification of an innovative full life sustainable approach to the valorisation of municipal solid waste into industrial feedstock
Category: |
Recycling and Landfill
|
Client: |
EC (European Commission) |
Duration: |
2012 - 2015 (completed) |
Objective: |
Over 220 million tons of residual waste are being produced in the European Union (EU27) each year. Each inhabitant of the EU27 contributes to this amount with about 1.2 kg of waste per day. As municipal solid waste (MSW) consists of a large variety of different materials and substances, and in each country one can find different country-specific conditions, MSW is nowadays either burned, biologically treated or disposed of in landfill sites. Within the project Waste2Go funded by the EU in the context of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) we try to increase the garbages value by exposing it to a cascaded process, which ends with the production of higher-value chemicals. The first step is a thermo-mechanical process. With the help of a rotoclave the MSW is exposed to a defined procedure characterized by a specific temperature, pressure and retention time. This step guarantees the hygienic sanitation of the waste and enables the organic fraction for further enzymatic degradation in the next process step. The enzyme cocktail needed for the complex enzymatic degradation process is especially designed for the heterogeneous residual waste. It should combine a fast degradation rate of the organic matter with high yields of desired substances. During the project this combination of different enzymes is produced in an industrial scale production facility, which has to be designed therefor. Finding the optimal process conditions and the most advanced techniques for the degradation process will enable the consortium to achieve a maximum yield of target substances. Based on the use of supercritical water, new separation and purification methods for these target substances will be developed in the third step. These new methods allow the separation of different monomers and oligomers of organic macromolecules. High-value chemicals are produced from these monomers and oligomers received from the thermally processed MSW. During the fourth step it will be possible to characterize the variety and quality of the chemicals and to elaborate their different usage options. |

Client: |
EC (European Commission) |
Duration: |
2009 - 2014 (completed) |
Objective: |
The ZeroWIN-project will examine and develop new and innovative approaches and effective strategies for the prevention of waste in industries based on industrial symbiosis. Industrial Symbiosis is concerned with regional collaboration of companies from traditionally separated sectors which exchange by-products, energy, water and materials in such way, that the waste from one industry becomes raw material for another.Goal:To find new and innovative approaches and effective strategies for the prevention of waste in industries based on industrial symbiosis 1. The development of innovative technologies, waste-prevention methodologies, strategies and system tools (e.g. eco-design, local industrial clusters, and resource exchange) exportable into other European and worldwide contexts shall represent the main focus of this action. 2. The goal is to develop a structured and innovative production model for resource-use optimisation and waste prevention, also taking residues as secondary raw materials, and test it in real cases of sustainable industrial networks. Results should translate the vision of a sustainable development into elements of a sustainable entrepreneurship, focusing at enhancing business opportunities according to a "towards zero waste" approach.Expected Results: * a decrease of at least 30% of greenhouse gases emissions, * at least 70% of overall re-use and recycling of waste, * a reduction of at least 75% of fresh water utilisation. |
