Thinking beyond sustainability

What began over 25 years ago with an environmental assessment (LCA) of vehicular bumpers, today encompasses environmental, socio-economic, and technical analyses of products, systems, and services in all branches of industry and society.

Issues surrounding mobility, construction, and modern-day living play a central role, in addition to the manufacturing of materials and products and to energy generation and supply. In particular, the recovery of high-value materials and the closing of material flow loops are of increasing importance in our work as they are in the world.

However, the content of our work is no longer restricted to traditional environmental assessment techniques. In recent years, we have also developed methods to assess products with regard to sustainable development. The integration of social and economic aspects, for example, as well as the inclusion of environmental impacts due to land use and impacts on biodiversity must not be forgotten in a comprehensive sustainability assessment.

Due to associated growing complexity of such analyses, one of our goals is to develop methods and tools conducive to practical implementation. These methods and tools can be customized for company-specific processes to best integrate sustainability practices into daily operations.

Methods and tools are continously refined to meet the requirements of future questions of sustainability assessment. Today the sustainability of products, systems, and services is more important than ever. Shorter product development cycles, new technologies, and the growing scarcity of natural resources confront us daily with new challenges.

EeBGuide
Guidelines for life cycle assessment of energy-efficient buildings and energy-efficient construction products published.
In the EU research project »EeBGuide« (Operational guidance for Life Cycle Assessment studies of the Energy Efficient Buildings Initative) scientists developed clear guidelines for the application of life cycle assessment for energy-efficient buildings and construction products. The Department of Life Cycle Assessment coordinated the project.
These guidelines was published in form of two books: »EeBGuide Guidance Document - Part A: Products« and »EeBGuide Guidance Document - Part B: Buildings« under the primary responsibility of Johannes Gantner.

Life cycle assessment of diesel fuel produced from water and CO2 in the sunfire-project

The Sunfire GmbH has succeeded for the first time to produce artificial diesel fuel based on water, CO 2 and green electricity. The Department of life cycle engineering carried out the life cycle assessment and thus the scientific assessment of the system in terms of its potential environmental impacts.

Status report for Electric Mobility (2015): Evaluation of practicality and environmental impacts of Electric Vehicles.

The status report developed with PE International assesses performance, practicality and environmental impact of electric vehicles based on different user concepts. The analysis is based on long-term measurements of around 500 electric vehicles of different fleets. The report can be downloaded from the site of the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology.
